RWJF Funding for Healthy Lifestyles

ANDA works to improve the Argentine neighborhood using a variety of strategies. One strategy was to create programs and infrastructure that enhance a healthy lifestyle.

ANDA has partnered with KC Healthy Kids with a vision to improve healthy living in Argentine. KC Healthy Kids has received a major grant from Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities (HKHC), a national community-action initiative of RWJF, focusing on making systemic, environmental changes to fight childhood obesity. The HKHC initiative is to increase opportunities for physical activity and improve access to affordable, healthy foods in two neighborhoods in KCK and KCMO, The Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan., and the Ivanhoe neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo.Your browser may not support display of this image.

Local partners in the initiative are KC Healthy Kids, Argentine Neighborhood Development Association, Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, Weighing In Collaborative, Mid America Regional Council and the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition. They will advocate for policies that improve access to healthy food, such as making more fresh food available through community gardens, corner stores and full-service grocery stores. The partners in the initiative also will advocate for policies that improve the physical environment and make it more conducive to active lifestyles, such as adding or improving sidewalks and walking trails. The goal is to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by creating communities where children and their families have opportunities for physical activity and access to healthy, affordable foods.

Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City

At the same time, another grant initiative helped ANDA and KC Healthy Kids to accomplish the healthy foods goals. Completely independent of the KC Healthy Kids process, the KUMC Center for Community Health Improvement helped ANDA secure a grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. This grant is targeted specifically at creating a viable business plan for providing healthy food to the Argentine neighborhood.
