During the past three years, ANDA has led a community-directed, collaborative effort to address the community-defined most pressing problem—lack of access to healthy, affordable food. We successfully secured both philanthropic and venture capital to engage a chain grocer, Save A Lot, to open a store in Argentine. It is necessary to construct a building to house the grocery store. Construction was started in March 2013.
In addition to the construction of the store’s building, ANDA is fundraising to support collaboration between community members and new community resources that accelerate creating a community environment that reinforces healthy choices. The specific aim of this project is to strengthen local leadership and increase nutrition literacy to make healthy eating choices a standard for residents. The goals of the project are to support the development of a Community Health Food Council that will be a bridge between residents and the new store, maintain the community’s input on store operations, provide feedback on food quality and overall services and serve as a venue for nutrition education and outreach that is beneficial to the new store and to residents.
A second goal is to introduce community education and community-designed opportunities that increase nutrition literacy through in-store programming, school-based programming and through other community events.
